"Just Me" Visits "Hyperblogal" Tourism Ensues

Part of the fun of blogging is getting to meet fellow bloggers.  It's a little like reading a book that you like and then getting to meet the characters.   Donna has written her "Just Me" blog for years now.  She has frequent posts on it and Facebook.   Her husband Cliff is now retired and enjoys reading blog entries himself.  She spent part of her childhood in Harlem on the north side of the Missouri River and has fond memories of crossing the river on the ASB Bridge... she has always wanted to visit the bridge again and today was the day.  First stop was the pedestrian bridge over the very active railroad tracks... at least four trains passed while we were down by the river.

On the observation deck overlooking the Missouri River above, and, below, Donna standing by the water level marks for major floods.... bottom, 1951, middle 1844, top 1993.

Cliff is remarkably curious about how things work... and he pointed out many things that made the visit really interesting...

Above, the concrete counterweights.... the middle section of the bridge can be raised to allow taller ships to pass under.

We ended up at Harry's Country Club in front of a naked bar picture..... great food and super company.... I had to come home after lunch, they headed to City Hall to see the view from the top.

Low Mo

Headed down to the River with fellow blogger XO today.  Water level is very low....  the pole was two thirds under water last spring...                               All images copyright 2013 David Remley
According to the National Weather Service the Missouri River level is between five and
                                                                                   six feet.
Large numbers of people were using the River Walk today... bikers, skateboarders, hikers, walkers, and runners... Below the portion of the walk that goes under the ASB Bridge.   Above the walkway from the end of Main Street to the river observation tower.

Low Down On Kaw Point

Went on a photog-safari today with some new friends.  Took them to Kaw Point.  Water is very low
there too due to the on-going draught.
All the bank showing in these pictures was under water last spring. Above, Kaw on the right, Missouri River on the left.

River Low-Down

Saturday, while Lewis and Clarking, I noticed the river level was down somewhat.   Not too surprising with the drought.    Bank showing on the left with the wood pile is normally under  water with the tree-line being the river's edge..   Taken from Kaw Point in Kansas City, Kansas.

Kaw Point Summer

I've blogged Kaw Point before.  It's one of my favorite spots.  June 26th, 1804 Lewis and Clark landed near here (about a 1/4 mile up the Missouri) and stayed for a few days.  It's now a park, well maintained and easy to get to.  One can walk right to the rivers edges...  the Kaw is on the right and the Missouri is on the left.
The above view looks Southeast toward the city.  Below, looking north from the same spot.

I took the above photo for the grammar police.   Tracy?
