Historic Northeast Mansions, Volume 7, Frank Lowe House

This Gladstone Boulevard house was built in 1905 for Frank M. Lowe, Attorney and friend of R.A. Long who had his own mansion (the KC Museum) just a few blocks north. This house is coming on the market soon... see website link at end of post.
The current owner has a wealth of photographs and documents that show Mr. and Mrs. Lowe in the home. A few are shown here. Below, the title page of a tribute to Mr. Lowe written by his son.

Above, the entryway with leaded glass door... all woodwork in the home is original.
Above, stairs to the second floor. The original Tiffany Stained Glass windows were sold by tenants, illegally, a few years ago.. the glass now is replacement.... but still very lovely.
Above and below, the lady of the house, Mrs. Frank M. Lowe.

The Lowes called their home Havenhurst.... above, picture taken in 1909... just three years after it was finished.

The living room, above and below.....

Above, fourth bedroom and door to sun-porch.

Above, second floor bathroom, below, Mr. Lowe in his study.... hard to tell which room this was in...... could have been the blue room above.... just a guess. Bookcases are no longer around.

Above, family members knitting.... Below, the view from the third floor balcony..

Above and below, the backyard area with new deck.
Above, the back of the house, below, the oldest picture of the Lowe's the current owner has.... looks like it may have been at a ballgame......
All interior shots taken with the Nikon D3 and 14-24mm lens, F16, multiple shots sandwiched into one. Exterior shots same camera with 24-70mm lens. Interior shots ASA 800 tripod, exterior ASA 200.
This house is coming on the market soon. If you're interested you can watch for it on Eric B's website: www.ericbsellskc.com The address is 341 Gladstone Boulevard... it's in the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood.

Mother Natures Spring Finery

Kauffman Memorial Gardens never disappoint... Beautiful day.
Just took one lens today. 105mm macro... various apertures, all ASA 200. I generally shoot flowers in the sun with exposure compensation of -2/3 stop to avoid blown highlights... which can almost never be recovered.

Reservoir Clouds

Snuck over to Pendleton Heights today to take some pictures by the Reservoir. The Neighborhood Association is doing a bang-up job of clearing brush from around and in the old water container. It's looking really nice. Some color and some black and white were taken as storm clouds rolled in. The last shot, admittedly, is not at the Reservoir but at North Terrace Lake.
Nikon D3, 24-70mm all shots, ASA800, multiple exposures manipulated in Photoshop and other software.

Cliff Drive Rainy Day

Drove along Cliff Drive today and snapped a few in the rain. It is particularly lovely this time of year. Just don't come to see it on the weekends unless you're prepared to walk.

Above, Hole 4 of the Cliff Drive Disc Golf Course....

North Terrace Lake above.

Above and below, North Terrace Lake. All shots Nikon D3, and either 24-70, 14-24, or 70 -200mm lenses. ASA 800. No multiple exposure.

My mated pair of geese are back again this year. Nest building will begin soon on the island.

Don't Close Cliff Drive

UPDATE: The latest incarnation of this idea is to close the Drive at 3pm on Thursday. Unfortunately this is an exceedingly divisive proposal. A movement is afoot in Northeast to close the Cliff Drive Scenic Byway to vehicular traffic Wednesday through Sunday permanently. Rarely does Hyper editorialize in this space (just happy pictures mostly) but this has my dander up. It's a bad idea and disrespects the efforts of those who created the Drive beginning in the 1890s.

This restricts use of the Drive to the young and able-bodied and goes against 112 years of allowing use of the Drive by all.
Cliff Drive, part of Kessler Park, is a public space and should be open all the time to all the citizens who help pay for it's upkeep. It doesn't make sense for the State of Missouri to promote the Cliff Drive Scenic Byway if it's closed to traffic.

Those of us opposed to this have created a website listing our names. If you agree, please use the email link and give us permission to list you too. Your email address will not be kept.

Everyone should be able to see the views above, a Missouri State Scenic Byway, at the time of their choosing....
