Gifts From The North

This time of year gifts of ice from our northern neighbors in Montana, the Dakotas, and Nebraska start arriving via the Missouri River.  Above, the Kaw is in the foreground and is relatively ice free.  The Missouri is in the background.  All shots taken from Kaw Point in Fairfax, Kansas City, Kansas.

The River In The Rain - And Other Stuff

Gray, drab day.  Went to Kaw Point to see the skyline in the rain.   Light rain above, heavy rain below.

High buildings and low clouds.  Below, the whole area at Kaw Point is covered in mud from the high water levels this summer.. slick going.

Above, the General Ashburn, twin screw towboat built in 1981.  105 feet long, 30 feet wide.
Below, low clouds over the river looking north.

Above, train running along the levee.  This is below Quality Hill. Below, trains and cranes.
Below, one last shot after I decided I was wet enough.

High, But Not That High

This morning the Missouri River at Kansas City, hit a crest of 36.4 feet.  Highest crest since 1993, when the crest was 48.9 feet.   Some pix below.... The only black and white is 1993.

Above, today, below July 1993.  Use the dome for comparison.

The shot above show the Missouri River behind/north of the Downtown Airport and in front/south.

Above, Kaw Point.   On this day, none of the Lewis and Clark statue is visible.

A Crest In March 2019

The Missouri River crest occurred Saturday March 23rd at about 35 feet.   Roughly six feet below flood stage.   I ventured down to Kaw Point to view the high water Thursday morning and evening.   Above, the super moon rising east of downtown.  Looking southeast from Kaw Point.    Below, the view from above the boat ramp which is completely covered by water.
Below, the same view as above before sunset.

Above and below, views Thursday morning from the Riverfront Walk at the foot of Main Street.

Above, skyline from Kaw Point... the entire foreground in this shot is normally dry.

Above and below, the encroaching waters on the Kaw Point Park path.  You can see the Lewis and Clark Statue a little left of center in the above picture... that and the area just beyond it are usually totally dry.
Below, lots of visitors to the Park to see the water.   Millions of gallons flowing silently by.

Going For Sharp

Decided to head to the river to use every technique I've learned to get sharp images.  Not that I don't normally.  Used focus stacking, polarizer, best aperture, tripod, etc. etc.  All ISO 64.  Boat just happened to come along in the above shot which was 14-24mm lens at F8.

Used focus stacking for the first time ever in this one... five shots with the point of focus moving into the image for each one.  Camera did that work, then the five were imported on layers into Photoshop and aligned and merged.  You can accomplish something similar by using F16 or higher... but you start getting image distortion...
